Song suggestions #1

The 12yo doesn't know a lot of 80's metal or rock or punk. She isn't sensitive to the differences between genres or the kind of kids who listened to which bands. She never heard two kids with different types of denim jackets argue back and forth about whether Motley Crue ruled or sucked. And really, I kind of stayed away from a lot of that stuff anyway. I liked the pop stuff, but Journey's Frontiers was the hardest rock I liked.

So here are some songs to get us started:

Bon Jovi: "Raise Your Hands"

Ratt "Between the Lines"

Triumph "Time Goes By"

Twisted Sister "Oh Come All Ye Faithful"

Explanation

My daughter loves 80s punk, rock, and metal and wants to record an album with me this summer. This will be a learning experience for both of us. This blog is for links and tips and updates to help us make the album.

Recording Notes

I don't know how to make a good metal guitar sound. Here are some YouTube links to tutorials that look good:

Here are some of the pointers I'm picking up:
  1. Dynamic mic aimed off-center at the amp speaker cone, 1 inch from the cloth.
  2. The mic placement makes a big difference.
  3. Multi-track every guitar part and pan them far apart.
  4. High-cut the hiss but otherwise avoid EQing after recording.
  5. Or try low pass and high pass with a notch at 800kHz.
  6. 4:1 compression, fast attack, medium response (palm mute should be as loud as the open string)
I'll be trying these out.
