I don't know how to make a good metal guitar sound. Here are some YouTube links to tutorials that look good:
Here are some of the pointers I'm picking up:
- Dynamic mic aimed off-center at the amp speaker cone, 1 inch from the cloth.
- The mic placement makes a big difference.
- Multi-track every guitar part and pan them far apart.
- High-cut the hiss but otherwise avoid EQing after recording.
- Or try low pass and high pass with a notch at 800kHz.
- 4:1 compression, fast attack, medium response (palm mute should be as loud as the open string)
I'll be trying these out.
